How to Start a Travel Agency Website in India: A Step by Step Guide for 2026

You already sell Kashmir, Dubai and Bali packages on WhatsApp. A website makes those enquiries come to you instead of you chasing them. Here is the whole setup: domain, pages, package copy, photos, payments and the first 90 days, with real rupee numbers.

Start with the domain, and register it in your own name

Before design, before photos, buy the domain. Pick something a customer can spell after hearing it once on a call. Your agency name plus tours, travels or holidays works fine. Avoid hyphens, avoid numbers, and avoid a name so generic that you cannot rank for it later. A .com is still the safest choice, a .in is fine and often cheaper, and both cost roughly Rs 800 to Rs 1,200 a year.

Buy it from your own account on Hostinger, GoDaddy or BigRock, with your own email and your own phone number on the registration. This one line saves agents more pain than anything else in this guide. Every month we hear from an agent whose site was built four years ago by a cousin's friend, and the domain sits in that person's account, and that person no longer picks up. You cannot move the site, you cannot renew it, and if it expires you lose the ranking you paid for. If a designer says they will handle the domain, ask them to buy it inside your account and hand you the login on day one. We do exactly that on every build, see the process on our services page.

One more thing at this stage: if you have a .in domain and it is brand new, expect the registry to hold it for a day or two while KYC clears. Plan your launch date with that gap in mind.

The pages a new travel agency actually needs

A first website does not need twenty pages. It needs the five or six pages that answer what a traveller asks before messaging you. Anything beyond that can be added once you see which packages people click.

  • Home: who you are, which destinations you sell, where your office is, and a WhatsApp button in the first screen. Three or four featured packages with prices right on the cards.
  • Packages or Destinations: one card per package with nights, starting price per person and a photo. This is the page that gets shared in family groups.
  • One page per top package: Kashmir 5N/6D, Dubai 4N/5D, Bali 6N/7D. These are the pages that rank and the pages that convert.
  • About: your years in the trade, your team photo, your IATA or registration details if you have them, and the fact that a human in India answers at 11 pm when a flight shifts.
  • Contact: office address, Google map, click to call number, WhatsApp link and a short enquiry form.
  • Optional at launch: a gallery of real client photos and a blog you will actually update.

Writing package pages that convert, and sourcing photos legally

Most agency websites lose money on this page. They list Day 1 Arrival, Day 2 Local Sightseeing, Day 3 Departure, then a price, then nothing. A traveller reading that on a phone in Ahmedabad at midnight has no reason to message you instead of the four other tabs open on their screen.

Write the page the way you speak on a call. Say the hotel category and, where you can, the hotel names. Say what is included down to the airport pickup and the Gondola tickets in Gulmarg. Say clearly what is not included, because a hidden exclusion is the fastest way to lose a booking at the payment stage. Put the per person price for a couple and for a family of four, say whether it is on twin sharing, and add a line about the best months to travel. Then put an enquiry button after every two or three sections, not only at the bottom.

Keep the price honest. Starting from Rs 18,999 per person is fine if there is a real date and a real hotel behind it. A fake low price gets the click and burns the lead on the first WhatsApp reply. We broke down the full layout, section by section, in how to design a tour package page.

Pulling twenty photos off Google Images is the default habit in this trade, and it is the one that quietly creates risk. Many of those photos belong to hotels, photographers or stock agencies, and Indian agencies do receive takedown and invoice notices. It also hurts you commercially: the same Taj Mahal sunset photo is on six hundred other agency sites, so nothing on your page looks like it belongs to you.

Use photos from your own trips first. Your clients in Pahalgam, your team at the Dubai Frame, your group boarding a shikara: those photos sell better than anything stock. Ask past clients on WhatsApp for their album, it costs nothing and most say yes. For gaps, use Pexels, Unsplash or Pixabay, which are free for commercial use, and hotel or DMC photos only with written permission from the supplier. Compress everything before upload. A 4 MB phone photo will take eight seconds to load on Jio mobile data, and most of your traffic is exactly that: a phone on mobile data.

WhatsApp is the enquiry form that people actually use

In India a travel website's real job is to start a WhatsApp chat. Forms still matter for leads that come in overnight, but nine out of ten enquiries we see on agency sites come through WhatsApp, because the traveller wants a person, not a ticket number.

Set it up properly rather than pasting a bare number. Use a wa.me link with a prefilled message that tells you which page the enquiry came from, for example a message that already says the visitor is asking about the Kashmir 5N package. Then you open the chat already knowing what they want. Keep one floating button on mobile, a button on every package card, and a click to call number in the header for the older customers who still prefer a call.

  • Use the correct wa.me format: 91 followed by the ten digit number, with no plus sign, no spaces and no zero in front.
  • Never add 91 to a number that already carries a country code, that rings a random stranger.
  • Prefill a different message per package page so you can see which package is pulling enquiries.
  • Keep a business hours line near the button so a 2 am enquiry does not feel ignored.
  • Put the same number on your Google Business Profile and your Instagram bio so it is one number everywhere.

Collecting the advance without building a booking engine

New agents often assume they need a full booking engine with live inventory. You almost certainly do not. Live inventory makes sense for a portal selling flights and hotels in real time. For a package business, where every quote is customised on WhatsApp anyway, a booking engine is Rs 2 lakh of software solving a problem you do not have. The comparison in travel website vs travel portal covers when that changes.

What you do need is a clean way to take the advance once the client says yes. Three options work well in 2026. First, a UPI QR and a UPI ID shown on a payment page, with the client sending the UTR on WhatsApp. Zero cost, instant, and most Indian clients prefer it. Second, a payment gateway like Razorpay or Cashfree with a payment link you generate per booking, which costs about 2 percent per transaction but handles cards and EMI for higher value Dubai and Europe packages. Third, a plain bank transfer with your account details sent on chat, which still accounts for a lot of the money moving in this trade.

Whichever you pick, put your cancellation and refund terms on the site in plain language before anyone pays. It prevents arguments and it is one of the things Google looks for when judging whether a travel site is trustworthy.

What it costs and how long it takes

Here is the honest range for a first travel agency website in India in 2026. The build price depends mostly on how many pages you have and whether you want a template reskinned or something built around your own brand. These are our own prices, the same ones on our pricing page, so you have a benchmark when you compare quotes.

Launch day and the first 90 days

A website that Google does not know about is a brochure sitting in a drawer. Two free tools do most of the work, and both belong in the launch checklist, not in a paid SEO package six months later.

Google Business Profile is the bigger win for a local agency. Claim it with your real office address, add the website link, add your travel categories, upload ten real photos and post your seasonal packages on it. For an agency in Ahmedabad, Surat or Indore, the Business Profile brings more calls in the first three months than the website itself. Search Console is the other half: verify the domain, submit the sitemap, and then watch which search terms bring people in so you know which package pages to write next. Our full local checklist is in travel agency website SEO in India.

The site going live is the start of the work, not the end of it. Most agencies stop here, which is exactly why the ones who keep going pull ahead within a season.

In month one, watch where the enquiries come from and fix friction. If nobody clicks the Bali page, the price or the photo is wrong. In month two, add two more package pages built around what people actually searched for in Search Console, and start posting your packages on the Business Profile every week. In month three, add a small gallery of real trip photos and client reviews with names and cities, then check your page speed again after all the new images.

Track one number: enquiries per week, split between WhatsApp and form. If that number is flat after 90 days, the problem is usually traffic, not design, and the answer is more package pages and a stronger Business Profile rather than a redesign. Our tour operator website checklist is a good self audit at the end of the first quarter.

  • Verify Google Business Profile and link the website on the same day the site goes live.
  • Submit the sitemap in Search Console and check that the home page and every package page is indexed within two weeks.
  • Add the site link to Instagram, Facebook, your WhatsApp Business profile and your email signature.
  • Ask five past clients for a Google review in the first month, with a direct review link sent on WhatsApp.
  • Run the site through PageSpeed Insights on mobile. Below 70 means the photos are too heavy.

Mistakes first timers make

Almost every rescue project we take on has two or three of these. They are all cheap to avoid before the build and expensive to fix after it.

  • Domain registered in the designer's name, which locks you out of your own site later.
  • Paying 100 percent in advance. Half on start and half on launch is normal in India.
  • A heavy slider with six uncompressed photos at the top, which kills the page on mobile data.
  • No prices anywhere, so every visitor has to ask, and most do not bother asking.
  • Copying itineraries and text from another agency's site, which Google ignores and a competitor can report.
  • A contact form that goes nowhere. Test it yourself from your phone on launch day and again a month later.
  • Buying a portal with live flight and hotel inventory for a business that sells twelve customised packages a month.
  • Building on a platform nobody in your team can update, so the Diwali package sits online until March.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to start a travel agency website in India?
A reskinned template site starts at Rs 6,000. A proper five page site with an admin panel and WhatsApp enquiries is Rs 10,000, eight pages with hosting included is Rs 20,000, and a full brand build with a booking flow is Rs 40,000. Add a domain at roughly Rs 1,000 a year and about Rs 4,000 a year for hosting, SSL and support.
Do I need a booking engine to sell tour packages online?
No. If you quote every package on WhatsApp, a booking engine with live inventory is money spent on a problem you do not have. A package page with clear pricing, a WhatsApp button and a UPI or payment link for the advance covers almost every package agency in India.
How long does it take to get a travel agency website live?
Five to eight pages go live in about 7 to 10 business days if you supply the logo, package details, prices and photos on the first day. A .in domain can add a day or two at the start while registry verification clears.
Can I use photos from Google Images on my travel website?
No. Most of them belong to hotels, photographers or stock agencies, and Indian agencies do get takedown notices. Use your own trip photos, ask past clients for their albums, take hotel photos only with the supplier's permission, and fill gaps from free commercial libraries like Pexels or Unsplash.
Should the domain be registered in my name or my designer's name?
Always in your own name, on your own email and phone number. If the domain sits in a designer's account you cannot move, renew or recover the site without them. Ask for the registrar login in writing on launch day.

Want this applied to your own site?
