12 Travel Agency Website Mistakes We See on Almost Every Indian Site
We review dozens of Indian travel agency websites every month before quoting a rebuild. The same twelve mistakes show up again and again, and most of them are fixable in a day. Here they are, with what each one costs you.
Why the same mistakes keep appearing
Most travel agency websites in India were built once, by a freelancer or a template, and never looked at again by the owner. The agent sees the site on a laptop on launch day, approves it, and then runs the business on WhatsApp and Instagram. Meanwhile travellers open the site on a phone, find something wrong and leave, and nobody notices because the site never told anyone it was losing them.
The list below is in the order we check things when an agency sends us a link. The first four are the ones that cost the most bookings. If you fix nothing else, fix those. Our guide on how to get bookings from a travel website covers the positive side of the same list.
1. No prices anywhere
The single most common and most expensive mistake. A traveller comparing three agencies picks the one that printed a number. Contact for price reads as expensive or as a negotiation trap. Fix: a starting price per person on every package card and page, with a line on what it includes. It does not need to be exact.
2. A contact form as the only way to enquire
A form asks the traveller to give you their details and wait. WhatsApp lets them ask a question and get an answer. On Indian travel sites, the WhatsApp button gets several times the use of the form, and the form leads are worse because half the numbers are mistyped. Fix: a WhatsApp button on every package, with a prefilled message naming the package. The exact setup is in WhatsApp booking for a travel agency website.
3. A WhatsApp link that goes to the wrong number
We test the WhatsApp link on every site we review, and roughly one in six is broken. The usual cause is the country code added twice, so 91 91 followed by the number, which opens a chat with a stranger or an invalid number error. The other cause is a plus sign or a leading zero left inside the link. Fix: the link must be wa.me/91 followed by the ten digits and nothing else. Test it from a phone that does not have your number saved.
4. Eight to twelve seconds to load on a phone
A full screen video, a slider with six uncompressed 4 MB photos and a dozen plugins. On office wifi it looks fine. On a traveller's 4G connection it takes ten seconds, and most people have left by four. Fix: compress every image under 200 KB, remove the video from the top of the page or replace it with a poster image, and delete the plugins nobody remembers installing. If the platform will not let you get fast, see WordPress vs Next.js for a travel agency website before rebuilding on the same thing.
5. Stock photos of places you do not sell
A hero image of Santorini on an agency that sells Kashmir and Kerala. Travellers notice, and it signals that the site was assembled rather than built. Fix: your own group photos, even if they are phone photos. A real photo of your last Kashmir group in front of the houseboat, faces visible, is worth more than any stock image of a Swiss lake.
6. One Packages page with forty cards
Everything on one page means Google cannot rank you for anything specific, and the traveller has to scroll through Dubai to find Darjeeling. Fix: one page per destination and one page per package, each with its own title, price and FAQ. This is the foundation of travel agency website SEO and it also makes the site usable.
7. Departure dates and prices from last season
A package page that still says Diwali 2024 departure tells the traveller nobody is watching the site, and makes them wonder what else is out of date. Fix: either keep dates current, which needs a site the agency can edit itself, or remove specific dates and say departures every week from October to March. A site with an admin panel makes this a two minute job. A site where every change is a call to the developer means it never happens.
8. The itinerary as an image or a PDF only
Some sites show the day by day plan as a JPEG of a brochure, or as a PDF download. Google cannot read either, the text is unreadable on a phone, and nobody can copy the hotel name to look it up. Fix: the itinerary as real text on the page, day by day, with inclusions and exclusions as lists. Keep a PDF as an extra for people who want to forward it. The layout is covered in our tour package page design guide.
9. No office address, no registration, no people
A traveller sending a large advance wants to know the company is real. A site with no address, no names, no photo of the team and no registration details looks like it could vanish. Fix: office address in the footer of every page, the owner's name and photo on the about page, GST number and any association memberships, and a landline if you have one. This is free and it raises the close rate on every enquiry.
10. A domain and hosting in the developer's name
We hear this story every month. The freelancer who built the site has stopped replying, the domain renewal is due, and the agency cannot get into anything. Sometimes the site simply disappears. Fix: the domain must be registered in the agency's own account, with the agency's own email, and the hosting the same. If it is not, move it now while the developer is still reachable. Our own rule is that every client owns their domain and hosting from day one, and the full cost picture is in the travel agency website cost guide.
11. A homepage that is about the agency, not the trip
Welcome to Wanderlust Travels, your trusted partner in creating memorable journeys since 2012. Nobody searched for that. They searched for a Kerala package and the homepage made them scroll past three paragraphs about passion to find it. Fix: destinations with prices above the fold, the story about the company further down. Look at how the sites in our portfolio do it. The company story is still there, it just comes after the thing the visitor came for.
12. Nobody checks the enquiries
The form sends to an email address that was set up in 2019 and nobody opens. The WhatsApp number on the site is a staff member who left. We have seen agencies with enquiries sitting unread for months. Fix: the WhatsApp number on the site should be one that is answered within ten minutes in working hours, the form should send to two addresses, and someone should send a test enquiry through the site once a month to confirm it arrives.

When fixing is cheaper than rebuilding, and when it is not
If the site is editable, fast enough and yours, fix the list above one item at a time. Prices, photos, address and the WhatsApp number can all be done this week without a developer.
If the site is slow by design, locked in a builder that cannot do a page per package, or in someone else's name, the fixes cost more than a replacement. Our travel agency builds start at Rs 10,000 for the starter site and Rs 20,000 for the growth plan with package listings, and every one of the twelve items above is handled by default. The pricing page has the complete breakdown, the services page covers what is included, and if you are in Gujarat our website design in Ahmedabad page explains how a local project runs.
Send us your site and we will tell you which of the twelve apply
Message your website link on WhatsApp to 7383552512 or call 7383552512. We will reply with the mistakes we find, in order of how much they cost you, and a fixed price if you want them fixed. No charge for the review.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the biggest mistake on travel agency websites?
- Not showing prices. A traveller comparing agencies almost always picks one that printed a starting price. The second biggest is having only a contact form with no WhatsApp route.
- How do I know if my travel website is too slow?
- Open it on a phone on mobile data, not wifi, and count the seconds until the first package and price are readable. Over four seconds is losing visitors. PageSpeed Insights gives a score; under 60 on mobile means the site needs work.
- Should I rebuild or fix my travel agency website?
- Fix it if you can edit it yourself, it loads in under four seconds and the domain is in your name. Rebuild if any of those three is false, because patching a slow or locked site costs more over a year than replacing it.
- How do I check that my domain is in my own name?
- Search your domain on a WHOIS lookup site, or ask your developer for the registrar login. If the registrant email is the developer's, ask for a transfer to your own account now, while they are still reachable.
