Wix vs Custom Travel Website: An Honest Cost and SEO Comparison

Wix looks cheap and quick, and for some agencies it is the right first step. For a travel business that wants package pages ranking on Google and enquiries arriving on WhatsApp, the yearly maths and the SEO ceiling tell a different story.

The short answer

If you are testing an idea, have five packages and no budget, Wix will get a page online this weekend and that is a fair choice. If you are a running travel agency that wants a separate page for every destination, wants those pages to rank in Google, and wants every enquiry to land on WhatsApp with the package name attached, a custom site usually costs less over three years and does more of the selling for you.

That is not a dig at Wix. It is a well made product for a very wide audience. The problem is that a travel agency is not a wide audience case. Package pages, departure dates, price tables, itinerary layouts and enquiry routing are exactly the parts a general builder handles generically, and generic is what loses a comparison against the agency down the road. The rest of this post shows where that difference comes from, with numbers you can check.

What each option actually is

Wix is a hosted website builder. You pick a template, drag sections around, and Wix runs the servers, the security and the updates. You rent the platform on a yearly plan. The site lives inside Wix and cannot be exported as code to another host, so if you leave, you rebuild.

A custom travel website is built for your business by a developer or studio, in a framework such as Next.js or WordPress, and hosted on infrastructure you control. You own the code and the content. Our builds use Next.js with a simple admin panel so you can edit packages, prices and departure dates yourself, which removes the old objection that a custom site means calling the designer for every change. If you want the framework side of this question, read WordPress vs Next.js for a travel agency website.

Cost over three years, not just year one

The free plan is not a real option for a business. It shows Wix branding and puts your site on a wixsite.com address, which looks like a hobby page to a family about to pay you an advance. To connect your own domain and remove the branding you need a paid premium plan, billed yearly and renewed every year for as long as the site exists. Wix changes plan names and prices regularly, so check the current figures on its own pricing page rather than trusting any blog, this one included.

The point is the shape of the cost, not the exact number. A builder is a subscription that never ends, plus the hours you spend building and maintaining it yourself. A custom site is a one time build fee plus a smaller yearly running cost. Here is how that compares in practice.

SEO: where the real difference sits

Wix is not bad for SEO in the way it was ten years ago. You can edit page titles and meta descriptions, set URLs, add alt text and connect Google Search Console. A small brochure site on Wix can rank for its own brand name without trouble. The honest question is not whether Wix can rank, it is whether a Wix travel site will outrank the agencies already sitting on page one for the searches that bring bookings.

Those searches are specific: Kashmir family package from Ahmedabad, Char Dham group tour 2027, Bali honeymoon package with flights. Winning them takes one well structured page per product, a clean internal link structure between destination and package pages, fast loading on mobile data, and structured data that tells Google this page is a tour with a price and a duration. On a builder, each of those is possible to some degree, but you are working around a template that was designed for every kind of business at once.

Speed is the clearest example. A builder loads its own editor framework, app scripts and tracking on every page, and a travel page full of large destination photos makes it worse. You can compress images and trim apps, but you cannot remove the platform's own code. A custom Next.js site ships only what the page needs, serves resized images automatically, and loads quickly on a mid range phone over 4G, which is how most Indian travel enquiries arrive. Google measures that experience directly through Core Web Vitals.

The search side of the work is covered step by step in travel agency website SEO in India.

Package pages and itineraries

A travel package page is not a normal web page. It needs a price basis per person on double sharing, child with and without bed, departure dates with seats left, day wise itinerary, inclusions and exclusions, hotel categories, and a booking button that knows which package it belongs to. On a custom site that is a template filled from your admin panel: add a new package, type the details, and the page is built with the same layout and schema as every other package.

On Wix you can build something similar with its dynamic pages and content collections, but it takes real setup and you are still designing the layout yourself. Most agencies we speak to who are on a builder have done the simpler thing instead, one long Packages page with a paragraph each, which is the layout that ranks worst and converts worst. The layout that works is explained in tour package page design.

WhatsApp enquiries and lead routing

Indian travel buyers want to talk before they pay. That makes WhatsApp the main conversion point on almost every travel site we build. Done properly, every package page opens a chat with the package name and travel date already typed, and every form enquiry reaches both WhatsApp and email so nothing is lost when a phone changes hands.

Wix lets you add a WhatsApp chat button, usually through an app, but it is one generic button for the whole site. Prefilling the package name per page, or routing enquiries to two numbers, needs custom code or another paid app. On a custom build it is part of the package page template from day one. The full setup is in how to add WhatsApp booking to your travel agency website.

Side by side summary

Here is the whole comparison in one place, judged on what matters to a travel agency rather than to a generic small business.

When Wix is the right choice

We would rather you spend money where it works, so here is when we would tell you to stay on a builder.

  • You are not yet trading and want a page to show a few early clients.
  • You sell through referrals only and do not want search traffic at all.
  • You have more time than budget and enjoy building pages yourself.
  • You need something live in two days for an expo or a brochure QR code, and will replace it later.

When a custom site pays for itself

The case for custom gets stronger with every package you sell. If you run more than ten packages, publish group departures with dates, want to rank in a city or a destination niche, or are paying for ads that land on your site, the extra speed and the dedicated package layout start converting visitors a builder would lose. One extra booking a season usually covers the build fee.

Look at finished travel sites in our portfolio, or browse the ready made designs on our templates page if the Rs 6,000 reskin is closer to your budget. Full plan details are on the pricing page, and the national picture on costs is in travel agency website design cost in India.

Moving from Wix to a custom site

Because a Wix site cannot be exported, a move is a rebuild, but your content and your domain come with you. We copy your package text and photos, rebuild each page in the new layout, keep the same URLs where possible and set redirects for the rest, so the rankings you already have are not thrown away. Your domain is pointed to the new host on launch day and the Wix plan can then be left to expire.

Frequently asked questions

Is Wix good enough for a travel agency website?
For a small agency testing the waters or one that sells only by referral, yes. For an agency that wants package pages ranking on Google, fast mobile loading and WhatsApp enquiries tagged per package, a custom site does the job better and usually costs less over three years.
Can a Wix website rank on Google?
Yes. Wix lets you edit titles, descriptions and URLs and connect Search Console, and a Wix site can rank for its brand name easily. Ranking for competitive package searches is harder because of slower mobile loading, generic page structure and limited tour schema, which is where custom sites have the edge.
How much does a custom travel website cost compared to Wix?
Our custom options start at Rs 6,000 for a reskinned travel design, Rs 10,000 for a five page Starter build and Rs 20,000 for the eight page Growth plan with a year of hosting. After that, hosting, domain, SSL and support are Rs 4,000 a year. Wix has no build fee but a premium plan renewal every year for as long as the site exists.
Can I move my Wix website to another host?
Not directly. Wix does not export a site as code, so moving means rebuilding the pages elsewhere. Your text, photos and domain move with you, and setting redirects from old URLs protects the rankings you already have.
Will I be able to edit a custom site myself?
Yes. Our Next.js builds include an admin panel where you can add packages, change prices, update departure dates and swap photos without touching code or calling a developer.
