How to Get Bookings From Your Travel Website (Not Just Visitors)
Most travel agency websites in India get visitors and no bookings. The gap is rarely the design. It is missing prices, hidden contact routes, no proof and slow follow up. Here are nine fixes in the order we apply them.
First, find out where the bookings are leaking
Before changing anything, look at three numbers for the last thirty days: how many people visited the site, how many opened a package page, and how many sent an enquiry by any route. Google Analytics gives the first two. Your WhatsApp and email give the third. Most agencies we talk to have never lined them up.
The pattern is almost always the same. A few hundred visits, maybe a third of them opening a package, and enquiries in single digits. That is not a traffic problem. It is a conversion problem, and conversion problems are cheaper to fix than traffic problems because you already have the people on the page.
One more check before you start. Open your own site on a phone over mobile data, not on office wifi. Tap through to a package and try to enquire. If it takes more than three taps or more than five seconds to load, you have found the first leak already. Our tour operator website checklist covers the technical basics if that is where the problem is.
Fix 1: Put a price on every package
The biggest single reason Indian travellers leave a package page without enquiring is a missing price. An agent thinks hiding the price forces a conversation. The traveller thinks it means the price is high, or that the agent will quote whatever they think the traveller can pay. They go to the competitor who printed a number.
You do not need an exact figure. A starting price per person for a standard category with a short note on what it includes is enough. Rs 18,500 per person, 5 nights, 3 star hotels, breakfast, transfers. If the number changes by season, print the lowest season and say so. The tour package page layout we use puts the price beside the enquiry button, where it answers the question at the moment it is asked.
Fix 2: Make WhatsApp the main action, everywhere
Indian travellers close on WhatsApp. If your site only offers a contact form, you are asking people to do something they do not want to do, and then starting the WhatsApp chat yourself anyway once the form arrives. Cut the step.
Each package needs its own WhatsApp button with a prefilled message that names the package and duration. One floating icon in the corner is not enough, because it opens an empty chat and the traveller has to think about what to write. The full setup, including the link format and the mistakes that send messages to the wrong number, is in our guide to WhatsApp booking on a travel website.
- One button per package card, one per package page, one in the header on mobile.
- Prefilled text with the package name so your team knows the source without asking.
- Keep the form as a second option for people who prefer email, not as the first.
- Reply within ten minutes during working hours. The reply speed matters more than the button.
Fix 3: Show proof a stranger would believe
A traveller sending Rs 80,000 to a company they found on Google needs a reason to trust it. Stock photos of Switzerland and a paragraph about passion for travel are not reasons. Real proof is.
The strongest proof is photos of your actual groups, with faces, at the actual destinations, dated. Next is Google reviews embedded or quoted with the reviewer's first name and the trip. Then your registration details, GST number, office address and a landline if you have one. Put the office address in the footer of every page, not only on the contact page. A company with a physical address in Ahmedabad or Surat feels safer than a company that exists only on a form.
Never invent reviews or numbers. Travellers search your company name plus the word review before they pay, and one mismatch undoes the whole page.
Fix 4: Load in under three seconds on a phone
A package page with fifteen uncompressed photos takes eight to twelve seconds on a 4G connection. Half the visitors are gone before the price appears. Speed is a booking problem, not a technical vanity.
Compress every image to under 200 KB, serve them at the size they are displayed, and lazy load anything below the first screen. If the site runs on a page builder with a dozen plugins, that alone can add three seconds. This is one of the reasons we build on Next.js rather than WordPress for travel agencies, and the trade offs are laid out in WordPress vs Next.js for a travel agency website.
Fix 5: Answer the questions people ask on the phone
Every agency has ten questions it answers on every call. What is included. What is not. Is it a group or private. How many people share a car. What happens if the flight is cancelled. Are the hotels really 3 star. Can I pay in parts. These belong on the package page, in a short FAQ under the itinerary.
This does two things. It removes the doubt that stops the enquiry, and it lets Google show your page for the long questions people type. It also cuts the first three messages of every WhatsApp conversation, which means your team closes faster.
Fix 6: Build a path for people who are not ready
Most visitors are three weeks away from deciding. They are comparing, reading and saving. If the only options on your page are enquire or leave, most leave and forget you.
Give them a lighter action. Download the itinerary as a PDF, with your phone number on every page of it. Save the package to WhatsApp, which sends them a message from you they can find later. Join a broadcast list for departure dates. The PDF route works especially well for family trips where one person collects options and forwards them to everyone else.
Fix 7: Make the homepage a menu, not a brochure
Travellers arrive with a destination in mind. A homepage that opens with a full screen video and a slogan makes them scroll to find Kashmir. A homepage that opens with a search or a grid of destinations, each with a starting price, sends them where they want to go in one tap.
Look at how the sites in our portfolio handle this. The best performing ones put the top eight destinations above the fold on mobile, with prices, and move the story about the company further down where the people who care about it will find it.
Fix 8: Track which page produced each booking
If you do not know which page produced last month's bookings, you cannot repeat it. The prefilled WhatsApp message solves half of this for free because the package name arrives with the enquiry. For the rest, a simple sheet with columns for date, source page, destination, and whether it closed is enough. Do not buy a CRM until the sheet is painful.
After two months you will see something specific. Perhaps Kerala pages convert at three times the rate of Europe pages. Perhaps all the bookings come from the two pages with real group photos. That tells you exactly what to fix next, and it is usually not what the agency guessed.
Fix 9: Follow up like the booking depends on it, because it does
The website's job ends when the message arrives. The booking is still won or lost in the next hour. An enquiry answered in five minutes with a clear quote closes several times more often than the same enquiry answered the next morning with a request for more details.
Set a rule: every WhatsApp enquiry gets a reply with a price, a date and a next question within ten minutes during working hours, and an automatic acknowledgement outside them. If you do this and nothing else on this list, you will still see more bookings from the same site.
| Fix | Effort | Usual effect |
|---|---|---|
| Price on every package | One afternoon | Largest single lift in enquiries |
| WhatsApp per package with prefilled text | One day | Doubles enquiry rate on most sites |
| Real photos and reviews | Ongoing | Higher close rate on enquiries |
| Speed under three seconds | One to three days | Fewer visitors lost before the price |
| FAQ per package | One week | Shorter chats, more long tail search traffic |
| Ten minute reply rule | A team habit | Biggest lift in bookings per enquiry |
If the site cannot be fixed, replace it
Some sites cannot take these fixes. The builder does not allow a button per package, the theme cannot be made fast, or nobody has the login any more. In that case a rebuild is cheaper than a year of patching. Our travel agency sites start at Rs 10,000 for a starter build and Rs 20,000 for the growth plan with package listings, and every package ships with a price field, a WhatsApp button and a FAQ block by default. Full prices are on the pricing page and the services page, and the numbers behind them are explained in our travel agency website cost guide.
If you are in Gujarat, our website design in Ahmedabad page covers how a local build works, and we can meet in person.

Frequently asked questions
- Why does my travel website get visitors but no bookings?
- Usually four things: no price on the package pages, no WhatsApp route so people have to fill a form, no real proof such as group photos and reviews, and slow loading on mobile. Fix the price and the WhatsApp button first, they take a day and produce the largest change.
- What is a good enquiry rate for a travel website in India?
- For a site with prices on the packages and WhatsApp buttons, two to four enquiries per hundred package page visits is normal. Below one per hundred means something on the page is stopping people, most often the missing price.
- Should I use a booking engine with online payment?
- Only if you sell fixed departures with fixed prices and a high volume. For customised packages, which is most Indian agencies, an enquiry to WhatsApp followed by a payment link closes better than a checkout page, because the traveller wants to talk before paying.
- How fast should I reply to a website enquiry?
- Within ten minutes during working hours. The traveller has usually messaged two or three agencies at once and the first useful reply with a price gets the conversation. An automatic acknowledgement outside hours keeps you in the running until the morning.
