WordPress vs Custom Website: Which Is Better for a Small Business in India?

The short answer

For most small businesses in India, the right choice depends on one question: how often will someone on your team change the website? If the answer is every week, because you post offers, add products or publish articles, WordPress is a sensible choice. Its editor is familiar, thousands of people know how to use it and you never wait on a developer for a new page.

If the answer is a few times a year, a custom coded website is usually the better buy. It loads faster on Indian mobile networks, has no plugins to update and far less to break or get hacked. Changes go through your developer, which for a site that rarely changes costs less than the time you would spend keeping WordPress healthy.

There is no winner for every business. A coaching institute that posts results every month and a manufacturer whose product range changes once a year need different tools, and a good developer should say so before quoting.

What each option actually means

WordPress is free, open source software that runs more than 40 percent of the websites on the internet. You install it on hosting, choose a theme for the design and add plugins for extra features such as contact forms, SEO settings or a shop. Content lives in a database, and each page is assembled when a visitor asks for it.

Most of your visitors will arrive on a phone, often on a patchy 4G connection. Google measures how fast your pages load and respond on real devices and uses that as one of many ranking signals. A slow site also loses enquiries before Google even matters: people leave if the first screen takes too long.

WordPress can be fast. A lean theme, few plugins, compressed images and decent hosting will get a small site loading well. The problem is drift. Every new plugin adds scripts, and after two years many small business WordPress sites carry a slider, a page builder, three form plugins and a chat widget, all loading on every page.

A custom site starts fast and stays fast because nothing gets added without a developer deciding it belongs there. If ranking for local searches matters to you, that discipline is worth more than any single SEO plugin.

Security and maintenance

Because WordPress is so popular, it is the most targeted platform for automated attacks. The core software is well maintained. The risk comes from outdated plugins and themes, especially free or nulled copies of paid ones. A hacked site can show spam links, redirect your visitors or get flagged by Google, and cleaning it up costs far more than prevention.

WordPress is the better fit for your business if most of these are true:

• You do not want to think about plugin updates or security patches.
• You want a design that does not look like a theme thousands of others also use.
• You prefer to send changes on WhatsApp and have them done for you.

Whichever route you lean towards, these questions will tell you whether a quote is honest. They work for any developer, not only us.

• What is the total cost over three years, including themes, plugins and hosting?
• Who runs WordPress updates and backups, and how often?
• Which parts of the site can I edit myself, and can you show me the screen?
• If we stop working together, do I get every file, login and the database?
• Can you show me live sites you built, opened on my phone, right now?
